ISO/IEC 17025 Alignment Revision Poll

ISO/IEC 17025(1999) General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories is our standard. This version includes management elements from ISO 9000(1994).  ISO/IEC 9001:2000 has replaced the 1994 version and does not directly map to ISO/IEC 17025:1997.  ISO is currently giving consideration to aligning ISO/IEC 17025 (1999) with ISO 9001:2000.  The aim is to ensure that ISO/IEC 17025 management requirements are in harmony with ISO 9001:2000 keeping it a equivalent quality system.

What is not clear at this stage is just what is meant by alignment, and how this will be practically handled in terms of the issue of a new, or partial update of ISO/IEC 17025.  ISO Working Group 25 (WG 25) has been established to consider these issues.  A sub-group of this working group will report back in early July 2002 to the larger group, on how this might be done.  Please note that it is usual for ISO standards to be considered for revision only after 5 years.

In the interim, your feedback on this significant issue is sought.  Any such feedback will be taken to WG25 in July 2002 as a contribution from the 17025 discussion list (customers) stakeholders to the topic of alignment of ISO/IEC 17025.  The following questions are primarily aimed at establishing whether there is a perceived need among laboratories, at this time, for this review and alignment to take place.  Please also feel free however, to provide additional feedback which may not be covered by these questions.

The votes will be counted throughout the month of May 2002 and the results displayed early June.
